Playa del Carmen is the capital of the Riviera Maya. Playa, as usualy known, is a truly Caribbean city, famous for having one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, with powdery white sand and turquoise waters.
The hot spot in Playa del Carmen is the world known 5th Avenue. This pedestrian walkway is filled with restaurants, bars and gift shops. Night life is extraordinary on the 5th Avenue. Ask at the hotel's reception desk for further recommendations on dining and afterwards.
Playa del Carmen is full of activities that keep you busy. A few blocks away from the hotel there are tennis and basketball courts, as well as a gold court of 18 holes. For the most adventurous, skydiving is the answer, just to mention one of the most exciting activities.
Snorkeling and diving in Playa is popular with tourists. The second largest reef barrier in the world makes of the Mayan Riviera a paradise for divers.
Visas. American and Canadian tourists must have a valid passport, but to not require a visa.
For citizens of other countries please check with the embassy or consulate.
Clothing. Bring light, casual clothes. For footwear we recommend sandals or tennis shoes. This will come handy while visiting the ruin sites or taking tours. Also something more elegant for dinner time is a must. Sunglasses and lots of sunblock should find place in your luggage. Mosquito repellent too. However all these can be bought in almost every store in Playa del Carmen.Visa extensions can be requestes at the immigration office in Playa del Carmen. Upon entry you will receive a tourist card, which must be turned it at the airport upon departure, when you will also be charged a departure fee in Mexican pesos or US dollars.
Transportation. The main entry point is the Cancun Airport, from where you can reach the entire Mayan Riviera just by following highway 307. The highway connect Cancun to Tulum, with Playa del Carmen right in the middle. Hotel Las Golondrinas is about 40 minutes away from the airport. There are ferries for the island of Cozumel every half hour. The trip is barely 30 minutes. Our hotel is about 1 km from the ferry terminal. Also buses are available for most destinations in the Riviera. For Cancun you can board a bus every 10 minutes, with the bus terminal just 200meters from our hotel. Taxies are many, and inexpensive. Renting a car is also an option.
Communications. Playa del Carmen has all the modern communication services. Wireless internet, public phones for long distance that accept credit cards or cell phone rentals.
The post office is on Avenida Juarez, between 15th and 20th. It is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm and Saturdays 9am-12pm.
In Las Golondrinas you have free internet access in the reception and wireless internet available in the rooms.
Weather. Subtropical with scaterred showers. Average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. From November to February can get windier, and the lowest temperature can drop to 17 degreesCelsius. Tropical showers are brief but common during summer time; summer is hot and humid.
Medical care. Playa del Carmen has all the medical facilities in case of emergency. Drug stores are opened around the clock, and with 200meters from Hotel Las Golondrinas you can find 3 separate pharmacies. Local hospital are minutes away too.
Money. The Mexican peso is the official currency but in tourist areas the USD is accepted as well. Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere and traveler's check too.l Find the nearest bank and ATM just 200meters from Las Golondrinas Hotel or on Avenida Juarez.
Electricity. In Mexico the power supply is 110V.
Language and Religion. Spanish is the official language and in some Mayan villages of Yucatan people still speak Mayan. In the tourist crowded areas English is widely spoken. The religion is Catholic and many churches in Playa del Carmen offer a daily service. The closest church to our hotel is 300meters.
